The hike begins in Piano Provenzana, where we will meet for a briefing with the guide. After checking our equipment and giving an overview of the route, we will set off along a path that penetrates the lava flows from the 2002 eruption. The first stop will take us to Monte Pizzillo, an ancient eruptive cone from which we will enjoy spectacular views of the entire Bove Valley and the northern slope of Etna. During the ascent, we will cross volcanic landscapes shaped by several eruptions, with geological formations of great interest. Continuing on, we will stop to observe the hornitos of the 1947 eruption, small eruptive mouths with a characteristic shape. Here, the guide will explain the formation process of these volcanic chimneys and their role in Etna’s eruptive system. Our next destination is Grotta del Lago, a unique lava formation named for a small seasonal pool of water inside. Equipped with helmets and headlamps, we will enter the cave to explore its fascinating structures and better understand the phenomenon of lava ingrowth. Resuming the path, we will cross a moonscape until we reach the famous Grotta del Gelo, one of Etna’s most emblematic caves, known for its perennial ice. This is the southernmost glacier in Europe, a unique phenomenon that always leaves visitors speechless. The guide will explain the processes that allow the formation and preservation of ice inside the cave, even in the middle of summer. After exploring the Grotta del Gelo (Frost Cave), the return route will take us through ancient lava flows and scenic trails, completing a loop tour that will take us back to Piano Provenzana. On the way back, we will be able to make additional stops to admire Etna’s unique landscape and take souvenir photos.

It is also recommended to bring some sweet and/or salty snacks and a sack lunch. In total, the hike takes about 7 to 8 hours, so always bring something extra to eat!
