Reaching Mount Etna by Car: The Easiest and Most Flexible Solution

If you have a car available, perhaps a rented one, the easiest and most convenient way to reach Etna is just to drive to the main access points to the volcano. Using a car gives you total freedom, without having to adhere to specific schedules or depend on public transportation.

Why choose the car?

  • Schedule flexibility: You can leave and return whenever you like, tailoring the visit to your own time and interests.
  • Freedom to stop along the way: By car you can make scenic stops or visit charming villages along the slopes of the volcano, such as Nicolosi or Zafferana Etnea. These places offer charming views, typical restaurants and stores where you can buy local products.
  • Direct access: You can drive up to Rifugio Sapienza (1900m) on the south side or to Piano Provenzana (1800m) on the north side, parking conveniently near tourist facilities or starting points for hikes.
  • More luggage? No problem! With a car you can bring everything you need for your visit, such as warm clothing, hiking shoes, or even a packed lunch to enjoy a picnic among Etna’s moonscapes.

How to get there by car:

  • South slope (Rifugio Sapienza): From Catania, follow the SP92 via Nicolosi or Zafferana Etnea. The route is well-marked and will take about 1 hour of driving.
  • North side (Piano Provenzana): From Catania, take the SS120 to Linguaglossa, then follow the signs to Piano Provenzana. The trip takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes.

Useful tips:

  • Fuel: Make sure you have a full tank before going up, as you will not find gas stations on the volcano. The last gas station you will find in Linguaglossa, Nicolosi and/or Zafferana Etnea (village).
  • Road conditions: Roads are generally in good condition, but in winter or when there is volcanic activity there may be limitations. Always check the situation before leaving.
  • Parking: Parking lots (sometimes for a fee) are available at Rifugio Sapienza and Piano Provenzana, but during peak season they may fill up quickly.

The in-car experience:

Traveling by car to Mount Etna also means being able to explore at your own pace, immersing yourself in the nature and culture of the surrounding area. It is a perfect option for those looking for a personalized trip, full of photo stops and unforgettable moments. If you have a car, take advantage of it: Etna awaits you with its extraordinary landscapes and the freedom to explore them as you wish!

Public Means to Reach Etna: AST Bus

If you wish to visit Mount Etna using public transportation, the Azienda Siciliana Trasporti (AST) offers a bus connection between Catania and Rifugio Sapienza, the starting point for many excursions on the volcano’s southern slope. This option is ideal for those who do not have a car or prefer a sustainable means of exploring the mountains. There is currently no public transportation connection to Piano Provenzana – Etna Nord.
