Rifugio Sapienza is the ideal starting point for those who want to explore the southern slope of Mount Etna. Located at an altitude of 1,910 meters, it is a historic and strategic place, perfect to start your adventure on Europe’s highest active volcano.
Rifugio Sapienza is not just a refreshment stop, but a real welcome center for tourists and hikers. Here you will find restaurants, souvenir stores, a large parking lot, and a cable car station that will take you even higher, up to 2500m and not to the summit craters as many people think. The maximum altitude you can reach by transportation on Mount Etna volcano is about 2900/3000m. So if you want to get to the top, you will always have to walk. Currently, the summit is at 3400m altitude, and this means about 1.5-2 hours of walking. By the way, you can only climb to the top of Etna volcano if you are accompanied by an official volcanological guide!
Cable car ascent
Etna’s cable car allows you to reach an altitude of 2,500 meters in just a few minutes (about 12 minutes). From there, you can continue by 4×4 vehicles or accompanied by volcanological guides to explore the nearest craters.
Hiking
For those who like to walk, several trails depart from Rifugio Sapienza to discover recent and ancient lava flows, extinct craters, and breathtaking moonscapes.
Visiting the Silvestri Craters
Just before Rifugio Sapienza you find the Silvestri Craters, formed during the 1892 eruption. These craters are located along the road and can be visited for free. A fun addition to your visit to Etna volcano!
Relaxation and shopping
After a day of hiking, you can relax with a typical Sicilian meal or buy local products and souvenirs of the volcano in souvenir stores.
Rifugio Sapienza is easily reached by car, following provincial road SP92 from Nicolosi or Zafferana Etnea. It is a normal paved road, without deep chasms. There are some hairpin bends, however. During high season and on holidays, it is advisable to arrive early to find parking. There is a charge for parking.
If you do not have your own car and do not want or cannot rent one, you can also reach Rifugio Sapienza from Catania by public transportation. Every day, the AST bus leaves Catania around 08:00 to drop you at 1900m altitude at Rifugio Sapienza around 10:15. This bus does not run only on some holidays.
Around 16:15 the bus leaves again for Catania. Unfortunately, reservations are not possible and the full house is a full house. Therefore, our advice is to really arrive on time. Want more freedom and safety? Then rent a car: believe us, it is so easy!
