Piano Provenzana: North Etna at 1800 meters.

u-muntagna

Piano Provenzana is a landmark for those wishing to explore Etna’s northern slope. Located 1,800 meters above sea level, this fascinating place offers a unique experience of the volcano, different from the more popular south side. Nestled among pine forests and volcanic scenery, Piano Provenzana is perfect for those seeking a more intimate connection with nature and easy access to numerous outdoor activities.

Piano Provenzana is also known as “Etna Nord.” This is even though geographically the location is somewhat to the northeast. There are two routes to reach Piano Provenzana:

  • Via Linguaglossa through Via Mareneve (18 km) to Piano Provenzana
  • Via Milo/Fornzazzo via the Mareneve Road (18 km) to Piano Provenzana.

Both roads are good paved mountain roads leading to the resort. There are no deep chasms along the road, but there are some hairpin bends. The road is traveled daily by many cars, trucks, campers and motorcycles. Even the Giro d’Italia has cycled here several times to finish in Piano Provenzana. In short, a great road to ride a bicycle! From November 15 until April 15, there is a requirement to have snow tires and/or snow chains on board, as a traffic code. Therefore, snow can be expected on Etna volcano during this period.
