The trekking itinerary

The hike begins in Piano Provenzana, where your volcanological guide will welcome you for a briefing on the route and an equipment check. From here, by 4×4 bus, we will ascend to an altitude of 3000m, in the heart of Etna, immersing ourselves in the spectacular views of the volcano’s northern slope. On the way, you will already have a chance to observe the moonscape created by the lava flows that have shaped this extraordinary land. Arriving at an elevation of 3000m, we will begin our descent on foot through the North Rift, a unique wilderness area characterized by extinct craters and ancient lava flows. Your guide will lead you along a trail through breathtaking volcanic landscapes, telling you about Etna’s geological history and the eruptive events that shaped this part of the volcano. Along the way, we will make several stops to observe the unique details of the terrain, from the color contrasts of the lava to the fascinating rock formations. As we descend, vegetation begins to reappear, offering a striking contrast between the black of the flows and the green of the pines and woods that herald the return to Piano Provenzana. The hike ends with a final stretch immersed in nature, where you can enjoy the silence of the volcano and the unique energy of this landscape.

Details Trekking Etna North 3000m: Downhill among the Rift Craters

The excursion departs from Piano Provenzana. Departure is scheduled for the morning at 8 a.m. or 9 a.m. The meeting is always at least 15 minutes before departure, so you can check your equipment, receive the guide’s explanation and to have time to go to the bathroom. The hike takes about 5/6 hours in total, between the trek and the guide’s explanation during the hike. We have about 1000m of elevation gain on the descent. The trail is suitable for sportsmen and walkers. You need a good condition for the trek given the duration.

Trekking Etna North 3000m: Descent between the Rift Craters costs € 100.00 per person. Included in the price is the accompanying guide. Children from 8 to 12 years old pay € 85.00 per person.

Clothing, shoes & what to bring

For a good hiking trip, proper preparation is essential. We always recommend dressing in layers. How many and what layers depend on the season. But the higher you climb Mount Etna volcano, the colder it gets. In addition, wind can often make the weather seem even colder. A windbreaker and a hat are therefore not a luxury. It is possible to rent hiking shoes and a jacket by contacting rental stores in Piano Provenzana. We recommend bringing a backpack with at least 1.5 L of water per person. It is also recommended to bring some sweet and/or salty snacks and a sack lunch. In total, the hike takes about 5/6 hours, so always bring something extra to eat! Also don’t forget sunscreen and sunglasses! In brief:
