The route begins at Piano Provenzana, located on the northern slope of Mount Etna at an altitude of 1,800 meters. This place is easily accessible by car and has parking lots (for a fee). We start with a short briefing with the guide, and then set off on the hike. Along the dirt road, we discover a lava-submerged hotel and begin the ascent to the 2002 craters, located at an altitude of about 2100m. During the ascent, we will take the “Monte Nero – Timpa Rossa” trail to reach several volcanic morphologies, including fractures from the 1911 and 1923 eruptions that threatened the town of Linguaglossa. Here it is possible to admire some “Hornitos” (Volcanic morphological structures whose name comes from the Spanish ‘Small oven’). These formations are evidence of past eruptive activities and offer interesting insights for observation. We continue our trek until we reach an elevation of 2100m where it is possible to walk on the edge of the extinct craters, and admire the ‘buttonhole of 2002,’ which is a series of aligned pyroclastic cones formed during this eruption. After a stop to appreciate the view and take photographs, start the descent along a sandy path to return back to the starting point at Piano Provenzana.

For a good hiking trip, proper preparation is essential. We always recommend dressing in layers. How many and what layers depend on the season. But the higher you climb Mount Etna volcano, the colder it gets. In addition, wind can often make the weather seem even colder. A windbreaker and a hat are therefore not a luxury. It is possible to rent hiking shoes and a jacket by contacting the rental stores in Piano Provenzana. We recommend bringing a backpack with at least 1.5 L of water per person. It is also recommended to bring some sweet and/or salty snacks. In total, the hike takes about 3 hours, so always bring something extra to eat! Also don’t forget sunscreen and sunglasses! In brief:
With the reservation we send you our packing list, with the things we recommend you to bring!
